At the very beginning of our establishment 2020, we had the honor of inviting Master Yan Lei, a renowned inheritor of Chinese Peking Opera Mask painting, to Edmonton for a spectacular Children’s Heritage Carnival. The event was filled with excitement as children, under Master Yan’s guidance, hand-painted their own Peking Opera masks, immersing themselves in the beauty of this traditional art form.
Beyond the carnival, Master Yan was also invited to Roberta MacAdams School, where he delivered an engaging heritage culture lesson to students here. During the session, children not only learned about the history and significance of Peking Opera masks but also had the opportunity to create their own, gaining a deeper appreciation for Chinese cultural heritage.
During his visit, Master Yan was warmly welcomed by Hong Kong and Guangdong community members, who hosted a special gathering to celebrate cultural exchange.
He also had a memorable meeting with Edmonton Honorary Citizen and former Olympic champion Lüan Jujie, where the two remarkable figures exchanged gifts, symbolizing their shared support for cultural connections between China and Canada.
The 2020 Edmonton Intangible Cultural Heritage Children's Carnival was more than just an event—it was an enriching cultural experience that brought Chinese heritage closer to local children and families while fostering deeper ties between the Chinese and Canadian communities. Let’s revisit these cherished moments through our photos and look forward to more cultural celebrations in the future!
